PEPPA POULTNEY

QAFLW PLAYER

Peppa Poultney is a QAFL player for the Aspley Hornets. She began her career with Yeronga South Brisbane and played for the Brisbane Lions in the Coates Talent League, a high-level Australian rules football competition for young athletes.

As a representative AFL player from her teenage years, Peppa has often missed time with family and friends due to her AFL commitments — a challenge many young athletes face while chasing their sporting dreams. If you’ve ever missed a family BBQ, a friend’s birthday, or a school camping trip and felt alone or disappointed, remember: You’re not alone

Peppa Poultney

QAFLW Player - Born 2003 from Queensland

When Peppa was 16 year olds and an aspiring AFLW player, Peppa was consistently missing time with her best friend due to her junior AFLW committments. Missing parties, sleepovers and important hangouts.

“I remember when Sarah planned her 16th birthday sleepover, we had been talking about it for weeks, planning party games, decorations, and even matching pyjamas. But then I got selected to play for my NAB League team, and the match was on the same day. I couldn’t make it to the party until it was basically over, just in time to sleep over with a few other girls.

Sarah wasn’t mad exactly, but she was disappointed. She really wanted me to be there for the fun part, and I felt torn. I was so excited and proud to be selected for the team, but it hurt knowing I was letting my best friend down.

WHAT HAPPEN NEXT

Not long after, we planned a sleepover for just the two of us when my team had a bye. We watched movies, stayed up talking, and had the kind of night that reminded me why we’re so close. That was the moment I knew everything would be ok, our friendship wasn’t about showing up for just one night, it was about showing up for each other always.

We’re still best friends today, and we talk almost every day. Real friendships can handle the tough moments, and true friends will always understand that your commitment to sport doesn’t mean your friendship matters any less

PEPPA’S FAVOURITE MOTIVATIONAL QUOTES

  • You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.

  • Do you know what my favourite part of the game is? The opportunity to play.

  • Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place.
